This was an impromptu race that I'm really glad I signed up for. I haven't done many shorter distances races this past year and surprisingly, I've missed them! I decided to run this race because I needed a 6 miler and what better way to do it and have my money go to a great cause.
I headed to the race early so that I could take advantage of race day registration. Got that all squared away and attached my chip and number belt. Saw Dee Dee and Wes and we chatted until we headed to race start. I've really enjoyed meeting so many local triathletes/runners and the friendships that have come from this sport. Wes and Dee Dee are just good eggs through and through.
The start went off on time and we headed down 17th street. I saw Wes looking for me and gave him a shout. I was moving along at a pace that was way too fast for me ;). I have got to reign that adrenaline in - it gets me every time! Because of the loopy course, Garmin says I ran 6.38 miles. I tried to figure it out, but my splits add up to be a bit short of my overall time. Oh well, I still have a rough ballpark. Mile 1 was somewhere around 10:44. It's good to know that I have a faster pace in me, I just need to do some training to bring that out.
I slowed down pretty quickly because Mile 2 was 12:08. This included a few short hills because Mile 3 was a bit faster at 11:48. The second loop of the race was similar except for the first mile. Last 3 miles were around 12:16, 12:44 and 12:57.
My goal for the race was to just put in 100% and I definitely did that! I ran the entire race with the exception of walking 2 water stations. This is HUGE for me, and I'm really proud. (Most of my racing has been interval run/walk).
Official finish time was 1:16:36. This is actually my second best 10K time, and less than 2 minutes slower. Since I've been running long, slow for the past 6 months, I'm happy.
Thanks to Wes and Dee Dee for sticking around to see me finish - especially when they had a busy day ahead. It was great to see you guys!!
